Eight rapid routes

A new Parkway Express route

Our new Parkway Express route will link Canberra Hospital and Woden Bus Station to Calvary Hospital, and Belconnen Bus Stations. It will provide a direct link for people needing to get from South to North Canberra without having to go through the City.

Seven day bus network

A major problem in effectively communicating the Canberra bus system to locals and visitors is the separate weekday and weekend networks. No other city in Australia has this sort of timetable in operation. It is difficult to understand the range of bus routes and numbers that change on weekends even for regular weekday passengers. Our plan is to simplify the bus network and provide Canberrans and visitors with an easy to use bus network operating seven days a week. We will have the same bus numbers operating the same services, seven days a week. New improved bus stop information and signage as well as easy to use timetables will complement the simplified bus network.

Late night services every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights

Summer services

Let’s face it – we go out more in summer than in winter. Our warmer times of the year mean we are more likely to enjoy ourselves in the great outdoors or at Canberra’s great hospitality venues. Our proposal will ensure that during the summer months we provide more services for people who want to use them.

Split selected Gungahlin and Tuggeranong routes

Introduce additional Weston Creek to City routes

Weston Creek needs more direct City bus services. As part of our plan we will introduce a rapid service to the city, complementing the proposed X series of routes.

Keep every bus stop

Every bus stop in Canberra will be kept under the Liberal plan. The target for our reforms will be redesigning the routes that service those stops so that the journeys are faster and shorter for everyone.

Eight Rapid routes

The Canberra Rapid Bus Network will provide a sustainable transport option for all of Canberra. Rather than cutting the Red Rapid for a shorter and slower tram route, we will keep the Red and Blue Rapid bus routes and add six new Rapid services. These services will run in addition to local services. Click here to find out more about the new Rapid bus routes.

Introduction of non-stop services ‘X’ routes

Introduction of non-stop services: ‘X’ routes

We will introduce non-stop or express routes to make travelling in peak hours ever faster. Selected buses will become limited stops meaning that up to 10 stops will be removed from the route. This will result in significantly faster services and the flexibility to allow the journey to be varied according to real-time traffic conditions. This through routing means your existing bus can become an express non-stop journey to the city. Some services may also become non-stop between bus stations.

Late night services every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night

Canberra is a growing city – we like to go out and enjoy ourselves at night and weekends. Why is it, therefore, that we can’t catch a bus home if we have a good night out? Our proposal will ensure bus services operate every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night throughout the year until early morning giving party goers and shift workers a truly safe and economical transport option home.

Make bus routes faster

Many bus routes in Canberra, especially Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and Belconnen are circuitous or take too long to get to a local bus station. We will actively plan to reduce travel times and make bus routes more direct.

Introduce additional Weston Creek to City routes

Airport services

We will finally link the airport to the city and Parliamentary Triangle through a reliable and frequent service. We will work with the airport to establish the best possible service to finally bridge the gap between Australia’s premier airport and the city.
